You do not require a source port (Vavoom, JHexen, etc.) to run this
mod. In fact, it is recommended that you do NOT use a source
port, and instead run it in a true
DOS environment (Emulators like DOSBox are satisfactory if you don't
have access to a Win9x kernel). While Dark Realms can run on Vavoom, there are lots of rendering glitches
that may interfere with the gameplay or cause a crash. Sorry, but
I've tried 'em all, and none of them run these maps with the same
technical proficiency as what they were designed for (true DOS).
And, of course, you will need Hexen v1.1. Fortunately, if
you only have v1.0, the patch is extremely easy to find on the web.

DARK REALMS v3.0 (latest release)
|
This release features the long-awaited new hub (the project's third), with 6 new levels, and many new puzzles and twists in the storyline. And, to revolutionize Hexen even further, this new hub has 3 different endings, meaning there are 3 different paths you can choose to play - and ultimately beat. But this release can effectively be called a beta, as there are no doubt many undiscovered bugs.
Now, for those of you who have played the first 2 levels before in previous releases, to save yourself the repetition of going through them again, I have included a hidden corridor in the first level which, when found, will warp you straight to the third hub with all the items you would have gotten had you played the first two hubs throughout. More info in the included readme file.

DARK REALMS v2.3 (previous release)
|
This release boasts the complete revolution of the Eaute's Hideout level, with a glorious new design that event allowed the birth of some new puzzles. I hope you enjoy this change - it was a total shock even for me! As for other updates, I have adjusted some of the dialogue to make it more relevant to the upcoming v3.0 release, and thus eliminated irrelevant segments of the plot. I've begun restoring the patches I've replaced (giving them new resource lumps), but I don't need to finish that yet, if at all. O yes, and timid folk beware: this version contains scenes of obscene language.

NB: The wvar file is not included because it is not required as an external file. I didn't know this beforehand, but apparantely when ACS compiler compiles the file, it becomes hardwired into the wad. This saves some time, but if you are having problems please contact me. |

Stuck? Well, hopefully this walkthrough will be of some
use. Based on the UHS format, it presents hints one by one,
at the pace of the user. And because these files are HTML, all
you need is an internet browser. Note that this walkthrough is
designed for DR version 3.0. I
also kept the artwork and the aesthetics to a bare
minimum, focusing solely on the quality of the hints, rather
than their appearance. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

The title speaks for itself. I figured it would make for an interesting idea to upload the MIDI files I used for the Project so even those without Hexen can still enjoy mindblowing ambient and symphonic music. As new songs are introduced, I update this zip file accordingly. There are 21 songs in this folder, altogether clocking in at ~51:25. As for the titles of the MIDIs themselves, the sequence before the dash indicates what role they have in the game (for example, a number indicates which level it's used on), while the sequence after the dash is the song's name in its own right.

This is currently the most recent version of The Elven Gathering available. It contains the first two levels of the conceptual final product (which originally was planned to have four levels, though this may change). These two wads were featured as betas in version 0.1, but now they are more or less finished. While this is mainly an exploration-based map, as with Dark Realms, critical thinking is involved (and this time there are NO "Fool!" messages - meaning you're on your own). Also important to note is that these maps also support up to 4-player cooperative mode... not that anybody plays Hexen even as a single player these days...
